Creating Sub domains?

I just recently registered a new domain name. I am wondering how I would create a sub domain (ex. email.example.com), and have it transfer to an outside webpage. (ex gmail.com). I am using xampp for my web server and using EditDNS for my dns server. I have already tried creating a CNAME record but when I attempt to go to the created sub domain, I receive a Server Not Found error in firefox. Any help anyone could provide would ge greatly appriciated.

why dont you just add the sub domain, and then make an index.html on it which will redirect it to gmail.com in javascript, for example:

sub.mydomain.com - index.html:
