What do the Extensions for Websites Mean?

What do the extensions that you find atthe end of a web address mean? Are they just alternatives so more people can register the same domain name? If they make a differance, what should I register my website as? (.com,.org,.info,etc.) I%26#039;m making a website to post my own videos on and make forums and stuff like that? Any suggesstions?

Different extensions stand for what type of website your website will be. Most websites are .com (commercial). Some are .gov (government). Yours would normally be .com
