Websites/DNS servers?

I am wondering once a domain name is registered, website is set-up and a DNS server is changed and set...how long does it take for it to resolve online?...was told 48 hrs. but it%26#039;s been about 3 days and still not working.

Anyone with any help, ideas or suggestions on what to do or who to contact please let me know?

Websites/DNS servers?

The DNS system is distributed all across the world. No one person or entity owns the entire thing. As a result the time to resolve a domain varies significantly. There will be people who can get to your new site right now. There will have been people able to get to your site a few minutes after you changed the record (depending on how fast your hosting provider changes the record on their nameservers).

The 48 hours you were told is a very rough average of how long it takes. I personally have seen it take 5 days (but that%26#039;s rare). I have also seen it take less than a minute (equally rare).

If you want to check that it is online your best bet is probably to go to another website that uses a different part of the system. Your ISP will have already cached your old DNS record and you%26#039;ll be waiting for them to refresh it in their part of the system.

Try something like http://www.dnsstuff.com/ which will give you some idea whether the internet generally can see it.

If it does get to 4 or 5 days, contact your domain registrar and get them to check that everything is up and running ok.

Computer Problem Diagnosis is not unlike patient diagnosis. You have to know and test a lot of things. I am often puzzled that Medical professionals refer to this practice as an %26quot;Art%26quot; yet Computer professionals refer to this practice as %26quot;Science%26quot;. Lol!

Sorry for the distraction. I will do my best to help you.

I am assuming you are using some flavor of Windows on a system and network that is connected to the Inet by some form of broadband. DSL, Cable, etc. If you are using Dial-up some of my suggestions will not apply. No matter just make sure you are connected to the Inet.

Get out to the command line. Left click on Start, left click on Run, type cmd or command in the Open box then left click the OK button.

Now type this then press the Enter key,

ping localhost %26lt;Enter%26gt;

If you see something like this,

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time%26lt;1ms TTL=128

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time%26lt;1ms TTL=128

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time%26lt;1ms TTL=128

Reply from 127.0.0.1: bytes=32 time%26lt;1ms TTL=128

Ping statistics for 127.0.0.1:

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

It tells you your ethernet adapter is working properly.

Now type this,

ipconfig /all

You should see something like this,

Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes

Autoconfiguration Enabled . : Yes

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . .. : 192.168.1.1

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . . : *.*.*.*

Primary WINS Server . . . . . : 192.168.1.11

The asterisks should show the IP address of the DNS server your ISP gave you. You may also see a second address as well.

They should have given you the IP addresses of their Primary and Secondary DNS servers.

Verify the addresses showing for DNS Servers match the ones

they gave to you.

You can also ping them just to make sure you can see them on the Inet. If you can%26#039;t do you have a firewall? Is port 53 open?

It also sounds like you are using a DNS server on your internal network. What DNS server software are you using? Is it configured to do zone synchronization with the Primary DNS server of your ISP?

If all of this works and you see positive results from your side I would contact your ISP and tell them to make this work now or you are going to fire them and get someone who can!

I hope this helps my friend. Best of luck. If I can help in any other way just let me know.

Have fun but be safe!
